Today we learn about what it is like to be a rich man. We have all dreamed of being rich! What we would do with all of our money… what we would buy first….

Unfortunately, this is not a reality for most humans on this planet, so in the story Lazarus and the Rich Man, we see ourselves as the poor man.

But are we really?

This is a story about two good men.

The rich man lived a good life. He had everything he needed to provide for himself a comfortable life. He wasn’t rich like a prince or tax collector. But he was comfortable. He pays no attention to family, friends or others unless it is necessary. Although it is not mentioned if he was a faithful man, we must assume he did believe in God.

Lazarus was very poor, probably homeless, and definitely a beggar. He often stayed at the gate of a rich man in hopes of getting scraps from his table. He was often sick and had sores on his body. In some depictions, Lazarus was a simple person who was overlooked and ignored by the rich man and others in his comfortable life.

In the story, Lazarus and the rich man die. Lazarus goes to heaven, and the rich man went to hell.

Since the rich man separated himself from everyone while alive, he has been separated from everyone for eternity. He did not take care or show concern for others when he was alive, so he did not serve anyone but himself.

SERVING OTHERS IS SERVING GOD.

Jesus tells this story to the Pharisees, to explain to them that they are blinded by their own wants and needs, as well as the expectations they put on the Jewish people.

When you don’t care for others, you disconnect yourself from God and will be alone, even before you die.

We learn in this parable that God has paths for us. We must live life looking toward God everyday in order to find what these paths are. He places us in situations to help others, to lead others and to serve others. We only need to open our eyes and not be blinded by the “things” we have in front of us.

Stay connected to God’s own love and generous heart and you WILL always be rewarded.

How can you stay connected to God and to others?

• See the “Lazarus” at Your Gate:  There are many people suffering or lonely around us. Look for those in need—the hungry, the sick, the poor, the isolated—and recognize them as your brothers and sisters in Christ. 
• Act with Compassion:  The rich man was condemned not for his wealth but for his indifference and selfishness. Instead of thinking only of yourself, be compassionate; think of and help others. 
• Empower, Don’t Just Give: Charity isn’t just giving basic help (food, clothes etc…) but to also be self confident in faith and life. Look for ways to help others be educated, have opportunities, or have a meaningful life. 
• Avoid Being Self-Centered: The rich man’s sin was his belief that he was the greatest and deserved the best for himself. Be humble in your life. Have a Christ-like attitude.  Serve others, win souls and connect with God and others. 
• Act Urgently: The story serves as a wake-up call. Don’t wait to show kindness or to do good deeds. TIME IS VERY SHORT! Life is fragile. 
• Perform Works of Mercy: Corporal works of mercy (feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc.) and spiritual works of mercy (caring for the poor). 
• Support Organizations: Join or support organizations who work directly to serve those in need. 
• Visit the Lonely: Make time to visit patients in hospitals or people in nursing homes. Offer friendship and show you care, as they often feel forgotten. 
• Share What You Have: Be generous with your possessions and your time, helping others who are in need, even in small ways. 
• See Christ in the Poor: By serving the poor, you can see and serve Jesus Christ like so many others have.

Hoy aprendemos cómo es ser rico. ¡Todos hemos soñado con serlo! Qué haríamos con todo nuestro dinero… qué compraríamos primero…

Desafortunadamente, esto no es una realidad para la mayoría de los humanos en este planeta, así que en la historia de Lázaro y el Hombre Rico, nos vemos como el hombre pobre.

¿Pero realmente lo somos?

Esta es la historia de dos hombres buenos.

El hombre rico vivió una buena vida. Tenía todo lo necesario para una vida cómoda. No era rico como un príncipe o un recaudador de impuestos. Pero era acomodado. No prestaba atención a su familia, amigos ni a los demás a menos que fuera necesario. Aunque no se menciona si era un hombre fiel, debemos asumir que creía en Dios.

Lázaro era muy pobre, probablemente sin hogar y definitivamente un mendigo. A menudo se quedaba en la puerta de un hombre rico con la esperanza de conseguir migajas de su mesa. A menudo estaba enfermo y tenía llagas en el cuerpo. En algunas representaciones, Lázaro era una persona sencilla, ignorada por el hombre rico y otros en su cómoda vida.

En la historia, Lázaro y el hombre rico mueren. Lázaro va al cielo y el hombre rico al infierno.

Como el hombre rico se separó de todos en vida, ha estado separado de todos por la eternidad. No cuidó ni se preocupó por los demás en vida, por lo que no sirvió a nadie más que a sí mismo.

SERVIR A LOS DEMÁS ES SERVIR A DIOS.

Jesús les cuenta esta historia a los fariseos para explicarles que están cegados por sus propios deseos y necesidades, así como por las expectativas que depositan en el pueblo judío.

Cuando no te preocupas por los demás, te desconectas de Dios y estarás solo, incluso antes de morir.

Aprendemos en esta parábola que Dios tiene caminos para nosotros. Debemos vivir la vida mirando hacia Dios cada día para encontrar cuáles son estos caminos. Él nos pone en situaciones para ayudar, guiar y servir a los demás. Solo necesitamos abrir los ojos y no dejarnos cegar por las cosas que tenemos frente a nosotros.

Mantente conectado con el amor y el corazón generoso de Dios, y siempre serás recompensado.

¿Cómo puedes mantenerte conectado con Dios y con los demás?

• Mira al “Lázaro” en tu puerta: Hay mucha gente sufriendo o sola a nuestro alrededor. Busca a los necesitados —los hambrientos, los enfermos, los pobres, los aislados— y reconócelos como tus hermanos y hermanas en Cristo.
• Actúa con compasión: El hombre rico fue condenado no por su riqueza, sino por su indiferencia y egoísmo. En lugar de pensar solo en ti mismo, sé compasivo; piensa en los demás y ayúdalos.
• Empodera, no solo des: La caridad no se trata solo de dar ayuda básica (comida, ropa, etc.), sino también de tener confianza en uno mismo, en la fe y en la vida. Busca maneras de ayudar a otros a educarse, tener oportunidades o tener una vida plena.
• Evita ser egocéntrico: El pecado del hombre rico fue creerse el mejor y merecer lo mejor. Sé humilde en tu vida. Ten una actitud como la de Cristo. Sirve a los demás, gana almas y conéctate con Dios y con los demás.
• Actúa con urgencia: La historia sirve como una llamada de atención. No esperes para mostrar bondad o hacer buenas obras. ¡EL TIEMPO ES MUY CORTO! La vida es frágil.
• Realiza obras de misericordia: Obras de misericordia corporales (alimentar al hambriento, vestir al desnudo, etc.) y obras de misericordia espirituales (cuidar a los pobres).
• Apoya a las organizaciones: Únete o apoya a organizaciones que trabajan directamente para servir a los necesitados.
• Visita a los solitarios: Dedica tiempo a visitar a los pacientes en hospitales o a las personas en hogares de ancianos. Ofrece amistad y demuestra que te importa, ya que a menudo se sienten olvidados.
• Comparte lo que tienes: Sé generoso con tus posesiones y tu tiempo, ayudando a quienes lo necesitan, incluso con pequeñas cosas.
• Ve a Cristo en los pobres: Al servir a los pobres, puedes ver y servir a Jesucristo como tantos otros lo han hecho.
